Punchtastic Punch Out

Nostalgia can be a very powerful influence when it comes to picking out a video game. No matter how many times I try to think of a different song, I cannot get the new Punch Out's remixed classics out of my head. It's a good thing it's so damn awesome because I might be going (more) mad by now if it wasn't. Sometimes you can tell just how much time was put into polishing a game into the lustrous gem your playing. This is one of those times.

The whimsical feel to it is as hilarious as it is nostalgic. From the silly cut-scenes, to the ridiculous, themed "stars" above their heads, you can tell a lot of time was spent making this thing as fun as possible. I wont go into too much detail about it so as not to spoil something that will probably have you bursting with laughter when you see it; But when you see a man practice boxing with a bear, hilarity, as it were, will ensue.

One of the things that I really appreciate is that there are several different control schemes. You can use the wiimote (or is it wii-mote?) as an NES controller for some classic play or go all out and use the nun-chuck and wii-mote to punch, and the balance board to dodge. Exercise included at your own risk (and disposition).

The other boxers are so much more fleshed out in this one as well. Every fighter starts the round with a quirky animated cut scene followed by a classic ring side entrance. And every fighter will let off tons of amusing phrases in their native tongue. The immersion just becomes that much more complete when Don Flamenco is teasing you in Spanish just to get you to punch him. Sadly this also means that you will only understand about 25% of the fighters, effectively missing what could be some of the funniest lines in the game.

It's essentially a classic with some revamped graphics , new fighters, and a more immersive control scheme. It may have skipped two consoles but it was well worth the wait.

Truth rings clear in this blog my nemesis. A classic like this should definitely be made more next gen without taking out that classic simple game-play.
